How to Storm-proof Your Home
With storm season upon us, we get a lot of calls for emergency repairs and power restoration. We’re always here to help, but we’d rather make sure you never lose power in the first place.
Here are some easy steps you can take to storm-proof your home this season.
1. Trim Trees and Shrubbery
Making sure the plants in your yard are well maintained is one of the most important things you can do in the winter. Make sure there are no weak or loose branches that could be torn off in the wind. Keep plants clear of exterior lights and appliances. These simple steps can prevent all kinds of damage during a bad storm.
2. Schedule Regular Roof Inspections
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense, but they don’t last forever. A leak can lead to mold, electrical issues, and damage to your personal possessions. Having an annual roof inspection, or better yet a bi-annual inspection can help spot weak points before water gets in.
3. Be Prepared for Outages
Storms can and do knock out sections of the electrical grid. Having a backup generator is a great way to maintain power during a blackout, but you need to make sure you have a way to connect to your house’s electrical system. Installing a proper power inlet will allow you to quickly switch to generator power.
