What to Do (and Not Do) After a Power Outage
Power outages are a fact of life on Vancouver Island. But what happens after the power comes back on is just as important as riding it out. Here's what every Comox Valley homeowner should know.
1. Don't Turn Everything On at Once
Power restoration often comes with voltage fluctuations. Wait 2–3 minutes after the lights come back, then reconnect devices gradually — starting with essentials like your fridge and heating system before plugging in electronics.
2. Check Your Circuit Breakers
If part of your home is still dark, check your panel. A tripped breaker sits in a middle position between ON and OFF. To reset it: switch it fully to OFF first, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, stop resetting it and call an electrician — that's a sign of a deeper issue.
Pro tip: This is a good reminder to keep your panel properly labelled. Here's why it matters.
3. Reset Your GFCI Outlets
GFCI outlets — the ones with TEST and RESET buttons, found in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages — commonly trip during outages. Press the RESET button firmly on each one. If an outlet won't reset or trips again right away, have it inspected.
4. Check Your Surge Protectors
Many surge protectors have an indicator light showing they're still providing protection. After an outage, that light may be out even if the bar still passes power — meaning your devices are no longer protected. If the light is gone, replace the unit.
5. Test Your Smoke and CO Alarms
Press the TEST button on every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in your home. If any alarm is chirping or showing a fault, replace the backup battery. If it still won't respond, replace the unit.
6. Know When to Call an Electrician
Some things aren't worth troubleshooting on your own:
A breaker keeps tripping after you reset it
Outlets aren't working even after resetting GFCIs and breakers
You smell burning or notice warm outlets or scorching
Your home took a nearby lightning strike
